I’ve been in fashion design for the last 2 years at my high school and this year, I designed this two-piece set. It is a tunic-style crop top and a matching mini skirt made out of pinstripe fabric and has a light wash denim trim. As a senior, this final project means a lot to me and will mark the end of my high school career, and all I have learned. I am really proud of my work considering I had no idea how to even sew before last year and the fact that I can actually wear something I made from scratch is unbelievable!
I was inspired by Alexander Wang’s recent use of pinstripe and denim, which adds a youthful and fun feel to a generally serious fabric. I was also inspired by the amazing suits Alexander McQueen makes for women and the strength they represent.
I envision myself wearing this outfit both day and night, which is really important to me as the fashion industry heads in a more sustainable direction. Having a versatile wardrobe is a key aspect of becoming more sustainable and I encourage those around me to be more mindful of this. For this reason, I photographed the outfit with two different kinds of shoes, a pair of white sneakers and a pair of dark black boots with studs, to demonstrate the versatility of the look.
