Over the years we have seen some of the most influencial fashion trends emerge and even have some make a huge comeback! Here are some of my favorites that really made an impact on our culture and society!
Juicy Couture Track Suits
These tracksuits were iconic, to say the least. They were first introduced in 2001 as a custom-designed outfit for Madonna who then turned them into a trend that would forever be remembered. These tracksuits were so popular among everyone from celebrities to people I saw walking on the street–I remember seeing everyone where these in every color possible. I even rocked a few sets myself 😉 Today, we remember the early 2000s as a time of colorful Juicy Couture Tracksuits. For example, my high school does a spirit week every year with a different theme each day. One of the days last year was the “early 2000s day” and I could not believe how many Juicy Tracksuits I saw! They really were such a timestamp for the 2000s era and are still influential today.
“Mom Jeans”
Keeping on the topic of jeans, from the late 80s to the early 90s, high rise jeans were a casual and trendy piece worn by young women and have been given the title of “mom jeans” ever since. It seems as though, from film and TV in the 80s and 90s, that mom jeans were the go-to for everyone’s everyday look; they went with everything from a blouse to a sweater and even a t-shirt on top! Shows like Saved by the Bell, Full House, and Beverly Hills, 90210 showcase nearly all of their female characters in high-rise jeans as their usual outfits. The mom jean made a huge comeback since the 80s and 90s and has found its way into the lives of almost every teenager and young woman today. It has truly replaced all other low and mid-rise jeans, even bell-bottom jeans. Personally, they are my go-to style and I love them. It’s hard to believe they ever went out of style.
Boho Chic
Boho Chic has found its way into becoming the definition for festival fashion. Music festivals, such as Woodstock and Coachella seem to be places where everyday fashion goes out the window and in comes Boho Chic. This style consists of bright colors, flowy clothing and lots of fringe! In 1969, Woodstock was filled with over 400,000 people wearing this style of clothing, not because it was “the festival attire,” but because its what people genuinely chose to wear. However, ever since 1999, the music festival Coachella has transformed this Boho Chic style: guests will spend days planning out their outfits every year to match the “Coachella style.” What once was only known as boho chic is now meshed together with what is known as “festival style.”
The Crop Top
Crops tops came and never left. They became extremely popular in the 70s and 80s. The first time I remember seeing a crop top was in Gwen Stefani’s music video for her iconic song Hollaback Girl. I feel that she is one of the many celebrities that made the crop top the staple fashion piece it is today. Crop tops were paired with various styles of jeans for the most part, but today they are worn with everything from workout clothes to dress pants and a sneaker! They have also found their way into the wardrobes of young women. When I was around 13, I remember leggings and a crop top were the look! (With a tank top underneath of course) In conclusion, the crop top style has made it through many years of the evolution of fashion and has some way evolved with it.
Bell-Bottom Jeans
Despite if you were a fan of bell-bottom jeans or not, there’s no denying that they were extremely popular in the 60s and 70s. Even though I wasn’t alive in the 60s or 70s, I still know the huge impact these had on pop culture and society. When people think of fashion during these times, their minds automatically think about bell-bottom jeans because they were so significant. Shows like “That 70s Show” has nearly all their characters wearing this style of jean all the time, both male and female. Since the 60s and 70s, bell-bottom jeans have made somewhat of a comeback in today’s culture of fashion with big brands, such as Gucci, Alice + Olivia and 7 For All Mankind selling them.
Shoulder Pads
Shoulder pads were very popular in the 1980s and 1990s. They were meant to give women a sharp and defining silhouette that men. Shoulder pads were in everything from dresses to skirts and even dresses. Back then, nearly every article of clothing had shoulder pads, therefore, everyday looks were made up of shoulder pads. Iconic figures like Princess Diana helped popularize shoulder pads and associated them with strong women. In addition, TV shows in the 80s like Dynasty and Dallas portrayed strong female characters in looks with shoulder pads. Within the last year or two, the shoulder pad style has re-emerged coming back into not only everyday wear but high fashion. For example, couture brand Balmain is known for its signature blazer with gold buttons. This blazer, which has shoulder pads, has changed the face of fashion today and has reincorporated the old trend back into today’s fashion culture!
